Energy company wants to lease more solar panels
So far they have completed phase one of the project but with enough demand they hope to build more panels that will allow Mesa County residents to go even greener.
Grand Junction resident Joe Moreng says there are plenty of reasons to use solar energy.
"Reducing our footprint, cutting our dependence on foreign oil and trying to make use of this gorgeous sunshine," says Moreng.
Moreng has leased five panels from the Grand Valley Power solar farm at $950 each. That's almost $5,000 worth of investment.
"It's a gamble that the price of energy will go up. Right now it's at ten cents a kilowatt an hour-- in ten years it may be 15 cents," says Moreng.
Energy Services Administrator for Grand Valley Power Derek Elder says, though people won't see large savings monthly, they will in the long run.
"What that payment gets you is credit from the panel for a period of 25 years to your bill. Current rates is about 50 dollars a year in bill credits," says Elder.
