Actually be stabilizing – which would be good news for any US based solar stocks that are still left in business. However, analysts have also warned that solar cell and panel prices are still falling – meaning more solar companies need to fold before the massive oversupply in the solar industry is eased. Hence and in light of their sudden gains, should investors even be considering US based solar stocks like Ascent Solar Technologies (ASTI), DayStar Technologies (DSTI) and Energy Conversion Devices (ENER)? Energy Conversion Devices (NASDAQ: ENER)

Energy Conversion Devices, through its United Solar Ovonic (USO) subsidiary, is involved in building-integrated and rooftop photovoltaics (PV). On Friday, Energy Conversion Devices surged 63.36% to $0.929 (ENER has a 52 week trading range of $0.20 to $4.80 a share) for a market cap of $49.5 million but its still down about 79% for the past year plus the company suspended production in November in order to cut inventories. The reason for the sudden surge was Energy Conversion Devices’ payment on its 3% convertible notes due 2013. The payment satisfied its current obligation on the debt after the company had deferred interest payments. However, investors should note that Energy Conversion Devices has reported revenues of $232,546k (2010), $254,416k (2009) and $316,293k (2008) along with net losses of $302,745k (2010) and $452,768k (2009) and net income of $7,839k (2008). For 2011, Energy Conversion Devices reported revenues of $21,956k (most recent reporting quarter), $73,108k and $1,494k for the first three quarters; net losses of $56,023k (most recent reporting quarter), $38,673k and $243,103k; and $42,518k in cash and $77,358k in short term investments to cover $349,075k in total liabilities as of September 30th. In other words, Energy Conversion Devices is not in the best of financial conditions.
