Byron Bay's kerbside campers cash in on exclusive streets for next to nothing

Enjoying a home-made lunch in the back of his campervan, nicknamed Ivan, Mr Foxx was flabbergasted when told of the prices people were prepared to pay to stay for a Byron Bay holiday.

"That sounds unbelievable," he said. "I make about $50,000, so my year's pay would be gone in two weeks if I stayed at one of those places.

"I only paid $21,000 for this campervan and we've got the exact same view. And we can move our view if we want to."

He said it was hard to estimate his own holiday expenditure but it was a long way short of the mega-mansion dwarfing his campervan.

"We brought some food with us and we haven't run out yet so I guess we haven't really spent much at all," he said.

The Wategos beachfront was yesterday dotted with campervans and backpacker Kombi vans whose owners and renters were sharing Mr Foxx's philosophy.

However, Byron Shire Council has tried to clamp down on unauthorised camping with rangers often fining backpackers for camping in zones that are designated no-overnight-parking.
