Solar panels to be installed at public works building
New solar panels will be installed at the Downers Grove public works building as the village continues to implement so-called green technology into its operations.
In 2008, local officials vowed to become more eco-friendly – to save money and reduce the environmental impact.
In the more than three years that have passed, officials say they’ve taken some significant steps toward that goal, including using LED bulbs for holiday lighting and replacing parts of its fleet with alternative fuel vehicles.
The 24 new solar panels that will be installed on the public works building are another step toward that goal. The project will cost about $24,000, covered by a federal Department of Energy grant.
While village work crews have installed solar panels on multiple public buildings, officials decided it would be safer to have contractor F.H. Paschen, S.N. Nielsen perform the work.
Once installed, the panels will provide electricity to reduce heating costs at the building, according to village records. And while officials say they do not yet know how much will be saved, they will track their savings once they get a power bill.
