Researchers Make OLED Display that doubles as Solar Cell You know that long-standing dream of solar gadgets that you never have to plug in? Well, it might be one step closer to reality. Arman Ahnood of the London Centre for Nanotechnology led a team that developed an OLED display with built in photovoltaic cells. This means that the waste heat produced by the display can be harvested back to help run the device.

The team estimates that 64% of the energy that goes into your average smartphone display is wasted. The team’s technology is designed to help drastically cut this down. The team developed thin-film solar cels that they built around and throughout the OLED panel to capture the various scattered beams of light and heat. The energy was then stored in a ultra-thin supercapacitor, so it could be immediately discharged to power the device.

Energy efficiencies of the team’s prototype aren’t stellar, at just 11%, but that it 11% of the wasted energy that gets recycled. And with a little development, that efficiency could easily creep up.
