Proposed East Longmeadow solar panels bylaw discussed during public hearing
EAST LONGMEADOW – A proposed bylaw that would allow solar voltaic arrays in the town's industrial zone will be presented during the annual Town Meeting on May 21.
The Planning Board held a public hearing Tuesday to discuss the bylaw and why it does not include the residential district.
Members of the East Longmeadow High School Environmental Club attended the meeting to express their concerns about the limited scope of the bylaw.
"After reading this I think it discourages homeowners from getting solar panels. I think you could make it (the bylaw) more open for people," said Alex Cotter, president of the club and a senior at the high school.
Resident Ralph Page also expressed concerns about the limitations the bylaw places on residents. He showed a picture of a small ground-mounted solar panel used to heat a swimming pool.
"I don't see why a small ground-mounted panel that is well screened and used for private consumption should not be allowed in a residential zone," he said.
