NRG exec builds brighter ways for US to make and use electricity

WEST WINDSOR — To David Crane, chief executive of NRG Energy Inc., America’s electrical system is an aging relic in dire need of an upgrade.

“When you look at the power industry today, you are looking at an industry that is producing power using fuels that were developed in the 19th century using a business model that was developed in the 1920s,” Crane said with a laugh. “So it’s time.”

Inside the lobby of his company headquarters, amid jumbo computer screens for trading in fossil fuel energy, is an electric “pump” for battery powered cars. So far Crane is the only person in his office to drive an electric vehicle, but he envisions green vehicles and environmentally friendly sources of energy becoming far more commonplace in the U.S. He says it’s inevitable.

“We believe that climate change is the single biggest environmental issue mankind is going to face in our lifetimes,” Crane said.
