Don't dump on solar

Two international energy companies have announced plans to build a giant solar energy field on top of North Toledo's former Dura Avenue and Tyler Street landfills. OCI Solar Power of Atlanta and CME Energy of Boston should be welcomed for their proposed $20 million investment. And Toledo should explore the opportunity to make similar use of more land than the 80 acres the companies identified.

There are nearly two dozen abandoned landfills, some which operated illegally, along the Ottawa River. Their common denominator is a legacy of bad disposal practices before the modern era of waste disposal was created decades ago.

Regulators have closed down or greatly restricted waterfront dumps since the 1960s and 1970s. But questions remain about how to use the land after those sites have been brought up to the standards set by modern pollution laws.

Efforts to cap the former Dura and Tyler sites, as well as one along Stickney Avenue and two or three smaller dumps, got a boost when the Chrysler Toledo Assembly complex was built. Now, there's the potential for these landfills to produce energy that industry needs. If the upcoming project succeeds, Toledo should market more such acreage.
