Town's Solar Panel Process Not in Compliance with State
The Southampton Town Board has approached Long Island Power Authority’s solar panel regulations with trepidation — partly because all the town requires homeowners to obtain before installing a solar system is an electrical permit.
It turns out, the town’s procedure does not comply with standards set by the New York State Department of State, which requires a building permit for the solar panel systems, Assistant Town Attorney Kathryn Garvin said at Tuesday's town board meeting.
"You don't have the option to do nothing," Garvin told the board.
When pressed by Councilwoman Nancy Graboski, Chief Building Inspector Mike Benincasa told the town board that his electrical inspectors examined the installations from a construction point of view, too.
“In an attempt not to burden applicants with the extra expense, we never required it,” Benincasa said. “At the end of the day, they got same inspection with an electrical permit.
