Then the requests start. My wife will want to print out a recipe, my daughter will text me (yes, that’s right, text downstairs) to ask for some family pictures of the cat in one of her hilarious feline yoga positions to share with her friends. 
At such times I used to have this image in my head of our house floating in the heavens somewhere like a rusty old satellite station, able to send out radio signals but incapable of fixing its bent solar panel.

Before I set up our home network I’d have been expected to stop what I was doing and address everyone’s issues like an unpaid IT assistant. Now my wife can click print on her laptop and a piece of paper will miraculously slide out of the printer where it is stationed behind me, inscribed with the ingredients for Chocolate River Cake or Russian Trout or whatever delight she is planning. Then she can wander in and pick it up it herself.

Meanwhile my daughter can just open the shared family picture file on her lappy and simply extract said cute image. And when my son wants to attempt to wake me up to the magic of dubstep he can simply plonk a track into the shared music file for me to be bamboozled by later.
