Project to heat up at Harbour House, senior high-rise

The Housing Authority of the City of Annapolis is working with a private nonprofit organization to install solar-powered hot water systems for two of its communities.

The project calls for 300 solar panels at Harbour House on Madison Street and about 30 at the Morris H. Blum senior high-rise on Glenwood Street. Officials said the pilot project will cut energy bills and carbon output.

The Housing Authority is working with The National Center for Housing Management, which specializes in education and training for public housing properties. Glenn Stevens, president of the center, said project leaders estimate the two solar panel systems will eliminate more than 200 tons of carbon emissions and more than 20,000 therms of natural gas per year.

Over the 30-year life of the systems, Stevens believes the properties could see as much as $760,000 in savings.

Joseph Johnson, the Housing Authority's director of security, said he was elated when the center approached the authority.
