Solar firm renting Anderson rooftops in first-ever project

CLINTON — Anderson County school rooftops are being rented out for a first-ever solar power project that officials say will be educational as well as provide new revenue for the school system.

"This should be a first worldwide," said Dr. Bruce Lipscombe, president of Lightway North America Inc. "Nobody has done this type of thing anywhere else in the world."

Under the project, power generated by arrays of solar panels placed on school roofs will be sold to TVA. That revenue will be divvied up between the company and the school system, with the firm getting nearly 90 percent.

"This project appears to be a very cutting edge and innovative project that enables the Anderson County Schools to earn $117,833 per year in rent and licensing without any front-end investment required," wrote James T. Woodward Sr., the system's chief financial officer, in a memo to Anderson County school board members.

County commissioners this week endorsed the project. The proposal returns to the school board in special session Dec. 28 for final approval.
