Renewable energy deserves support
The big five oil companies BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil and Shell have made over $100 billion in profits during 2011. At the same time they are also receiving billions in taxpayer-funded subsidies each year. It is maddening that Big Oil continues to benefit from special tax breaks, while also raking in sky-high profits, even more so during these difficult economic times. Many in Congress, including Rep. Nan Hayworth, R-Mount Kisco, have supported these outrageous subsidies despite strong public outcry to end them. Rep. Hayworth has been touting her environmental record of late, yet we must question her continued support of the fossil fuel industry and its deleterious effects on our health, including contaminated drinking water and polluted air. We should not continue subsidizing the established energy companies; instead, we should be encouraging more solar, wind and alternative/renewable production along with startups to guarantee an energy-independent future and a cleaner environment. President Carter challenged us to move in this direction some 30 years ago. Imagine where we might be today if we had heeded his prescience. Most likely, wed be ahead of the Chinese in solar panel technology and manufacturing. So far, all we have received from Hayworth is mixed messages on vital issues.solar panel bp - News
