I am looking at installing a solar panel heater on my pool. i don't know if it will heat better on on my porch roof or just to install it over the railing on the deck beside the pool.

if you are talking about the solar panels as the power source and the actual heating elements being in the pool..... check what the manufacturer recommends.... being on the roof, it is out of the way and not easily accessible to damage and out of sight...
