The school will buy the electricity at a rate about 20 percent lower than regular Connecticut Light & Power rates, and sell back excess capacity to the company, said Lou Jachimowicz, business manager for the school system.

Students will be able to collect and analyze data about electricity usage at the school and use it to study green, sustainable energy.

Sabrina Lavieri, director of secondary education for the school system, said the roof-top power plant will be incorporated into the curriculum for science, technology, engineering and math.

"Science, technology and mathematics curriculum standards become entwined, and students will be able to see firsthand how science and technology have practical uses that impact our daily lives," Lavieri said.

Principal Dave Milardo said the project makes both economic and environmental sense for the school and town as well as providing a unique educational opportunity.

"We basically have a nice science opportunity for all students right on out roof," Milardo said.
