Sharp adds employees to meet solar panel demand

In 2010, the company increased its employee numbers from 300 to 480, and those numbers have increased to 500 in 2011.

The company produces solar roof shingles and panels in Memphis, where it has had a presence for more than 30 years. It originally produced televisions and microwave ovens locally.

TC Jones , vice president of human resources for Sharp, said the company is required to produce 3,000 solar units in a 24-hour period, operating on three shifts.

“It has grown to the point where we have an immediate need to produce 3,500 per day,” Jones said.

The increased production has already begun, Jones said, and the company is in the process of hiring the new employees now. The majority of the panels Sharp produces will be used in the United States.

381 of Sharp’s panels were used in the second phase of the Legends Park residential development in Memphis. Panels were installed on 27 of the 30 townhouse and apartment buildings in that project and are being used to power the gates, porch lighting, irrigation and fire systems in the development.
