State: Solar panel maker Suniva could start-up in 2013 in Great Lakes Bay Region
THOMAS TWP. — Suniva Inc. has a “planned start-up date” of 2013 for a $250 million solar cell manufacturing facility in Thomas Township, according to a state document.But a spokeswoman for the company reiterated Thursday the Norcross, Ga.-headquartered firm has maintained that obtaining acceptable financing and favorable market conditions are necessary to build the plant must happen before construction could occur.
The Michigan Economic Development Authority authorized a nearly $8.7 million tax credit this week and extended a 15-year, $15 million photovoltaic Michigan Business Tax credit , first offered two years ago, to attract the firm.
In a Michigan Economic Development Corp. memo, the state projected the facility will hire up to 500 workers who earn an average wage of $923 a week. The high-efficiency solar panel making facility could mean 3,329 jobs throughout the state by 2020, and bring $88.
